The Center for Sustainable Value Networks or CSVN is a center of excellence at the Malaysia Institute for Supply Chain Innovation (MISI). CSVN has partnered with an MNC to create a program initiative called CSS or Center for Sustainable Small-owners. The CSS is aimed at safeguarding the interest of the independent smallholder farmers for oil palm while ensuring ethical and responsible sourcing for palm kernel oil with a commitment to no deforestation, no new plantation on peatlands and no exploitation in the supply chain.

As a multi-stakeholder program, CSS runs various sustainability initiatives such as:

  • Certification and Verification through MSPO, RSPO and Sustainability Scorecard
  • Scaling GAPs (Good Agricultural Practices) through Diffusion

Job Description

The Assistant Field Officer will be responsible to support all farm and non-farm related initiatives and provide operational support to officer(s) in charge.

  • Continuous engagement with existing and new Collection Centres(CC) and Dealerships to facilitate sustainability initiatives.
  • Records information, such as production, farm management practices, and prepares operational reports.
  • Build good relationship with project stakeholders i.e. local farmers, dealers, super dealers, govt. agencies, certification bodies, etc.
  • Establish continuous data collection from relevant project stakeholders i.e. Mills, CC, Super Dealer.
  • Supporting Smallholder Livelihood Improvement project based on set guidelines and goals.
  • Ready to be trained by Agronomist and Field officers and transfer knowledge to Learning Farms.
  • Coordinate and supervise sampling activities for Learning Farms.
  • Manage learning farms data collection on FFB Supply and Demand, nutrient management, water usage, fertilizer usage, harvesting cycle, Pesticide usage, etc
  • To support CSS team for organizing events such as, field visits, workshops, certification drive, etc.

Job requirements

  • Graduate from a standard vocational or high school supplemented by some college course work in agriculture; and extensive experience in general farm work involving farm planning, methods, and production; and experience in supervisory of farm work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Core Skills: Plantation, Communication, Planning
  • At least 1-3 years of working experience as Field Assistants / Officer or similar role in Plantation.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills in Bahasa and English

Faculty Positions – Malaysia Institute for Supply Chain Innovation (MISI) The Malaysia Institute for Supply Chain Innovation (MISI) is one of the centers of the MIT Global SCALE (Supply Chain and Logistics Excellence) Network an international alliance of leading-edge research and education centers, dedicated to the development and dissemination of global innovation in supply chain and logistics. Together, this network of centers educates hundreds of master’s students, doctoral candidates, and executives each year. MISI is recruiting for two faculty positions at the Associate and Assistant Professor Level to support research activities in the area of transportation logistics and supply chain management and to teach in the graduate (Master & PHD) and executive education programs at MISI


Faculty members are responsible for advancing the center’s mission of excellence in education, research, and corporate engagement. All faculty members are expected to develop, design, and deliver world-class teaching material at the master and doctoral levels. As part of the research team, faculty members are responsible for creating, supporting, and disseminating new knowledge in logistics, supply chain management, and related fields. Faculty are expected to conduct high quality research in collaboration with industry and government; supervise theses; publish in top international journals, academic proceedings, trade journals, and working papers; and participate fully in all industrial and educational programs offered and supported by the MIT Global SCALE centers. Faculty members are expected to work with and be in regular contact with researchers, educators, and thought leaders (academic and industry) across the world, including researchers at MIT and the international MIT Global SCALE Network centers.


Candidates should possess:

  1. A PhD in supply chain management, transportation, logistics, operations management, information systems, engineering, economics, business, or a related discipline;
  2. International exposure, reflected in publications, projects, conference participation and guest lectures;
  3. Ability to develop and deliver lectures and class material in English at the graduate level (both Masters and Doctoral);
  4. Ability to generate sponsored research and promote technology transfer and entrepreneurship;
  5. Ability to communicate with industry, give presentations, and lead meetings in English.

This unique Post-Doctoral Research Associate position is hosted by the Malaysia Institute for Supply Chain Innovation (MISI) at one of its Centers of Excellence viz. The Center for Sustainable Value Networks (CSVN) at Shah Alam near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

This research associate will examine the upstream oil palm supply chain and work with existing qualitative and quantitative data collected from a multi-year project. The candidate will be primarily responsible for conducting analysis of existing data sets, assisting and taking leadership in writing manuscripts for publication in reputed journals. The current position is for two years with a yearly renewal and a possibility of extension beyond two years depending upon funding and performance. The candidate should be comfortable traveling locally within Malaysia.

An ideal candidate will have demonstrated research and leadership in supply chain sustainability. Additional responsibilities include – working with project sponsors, stakeholders and research staff in all matters related to the project. Candidates are expected to support center activities when appropriate including presenting results and findings to various audiences. Good presentation skills desirable.


An ideal candidate will have a PhD in a Supply Chain, Sustainability, Industrial Ecology, Social Sciences, Agri-Business or a related discipline.  Proficiency with English writing and communication with excellent technical writing skills are a must. Experience with field work and engaging with industry and producers is preferred.

In-depth knowledge of at least one of the following research areas is required

  • food and agri-supply chains
  • supply chain sustainability
  • value chain analysis
  • commodity supply chains

Candidate must have published (or have a strong pipeline) in journals related to sustainability, supply chain and operations management, logistics or a related discipline such as above and have experience with research methodology based on both qualitative and quantitative data. Knowledge of statistical software and analytics tools is highly desirable. Preference will be given to those with both methodological and practical work experience.

The IT manager will be responsible for coordinating, planning and leading computer-related activities in MISI. The IT manager will help determine the IT needs at MISI and will be responsible for implementing computer systems, network capabilities and telecommunication systems to fulfill the  information systems requirement.

The MISI IT manager must develop a strategy to build a capable online education system and be knowledgeable about the hardware and software to support this system. The MISI IT manager will also be responsible for supporting the IT frameworks required for the rapid development of MISI’s website and social media capability. He/she will also have the ability to understand data analysis, machine learning. All capabilities in supply chain management and be able to provide systems support for the development of such systems in MISI research and education.
