Inventory Models for On-Line Retailing

Prof. Graves visited the MISI Campus on March 31, met with faculty and students, and gave two seminars on his recent research in developing inventory models for on-line retailers. Prof. Graves discussed approaches to three significant issues in this area: inventory placement, inventory replenishment, and order fulfillment from inventory. Prof. Graves lectures were well attended by students from MISI’s MSCM and PSCM masters degree programs, researchers, and faculty.

Prof. Graves has been a member of the faculty of MIT Sloan School of Management since 1977. He is considered among the world’s foremost authorities on manufacturing capacity flexibility and inventory positioning in multi-echelong supply chains

Prof. Graves teaches classes in supply chain planning and design, and in mathematical modelling and analysis, as applied to manufacturing, supply chains and distribution systems. His primary research interests are in the design and planning of manufacturing systems and supply chains; recent efforts have considered supply-chain optimization, the evaluation of manufacturing flexibility and various tactical issues arising in e-retailing. He has authored over 60 refereed papers and is the co-editor of two handbooks: Logistics of Production and Inventory and Supply Chain Management: Design, Coordination and Operation. He has served on several editorial boards for journals in operations management and management science, and is currently the editor-in-chief of Manufacturing & Services Operations Management. He has conducted industry-based research projects with numerous companies, including AT&T, IBM, Monsanto, Eastman Kodak, Amazon.com, Intel, General Motors, Boeing, Teradyne and Staples. He has been a member of the Board of Advisors to Optiant and Invistics, and the chief science advisor to JDA Software. He has been selected as an INFORMS Fellow, a MSOM Fellow and a POMS Fellow.


Bio:
Professor Stephen C. Graves is the Abraham J. Siegel Professor of Management Science at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He has been a faculty member at the Sloan School since 1977. He has served as a deputy dean at the MIT Sloan School (1990 – 1993), and the co-director of the MIT Leaders for Manufacturing (LFM) Program (1989- 1990 and 1994 – 2001) and the System Design and Management (SDM) Program (1999 – 2001). He served a two-year term as the Chair of the MIT Faculty (2001 – 2003). He has joint faculty appointments with both the Mechanical Engineering Department and the Engineering Systems Division at MIT. He is also a Faculty Fellow of the Singapore-MIT Alliance.
