Johor, November 14 2019 — The MISI Centre for Sustainable Small-owners (CSS) conducted its second Field Day for Core Learning Farm (LeFa). Sixteen smallholder farmers from the Batu Pahat and Pontian areas and the CSS team were present.

The objective of LeFa Field Day is to disseminate Good Agricultural Practices to smallholder farmers. The event was opened by CSS Field Officer and the representative from Procter & Gamble (P&G) who thanked all the farmers and briefed them about the P&G Smallholder program. A sharing from the smallholders on their Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) RT17 experiences was also conducted which helps to encourage new farmers to be part of the program.

In a session with CSS Agronomists, the farmers learnt how to place the cut fronds strategically in the farm and apply fertilizer optimally so as to enable better nutrient uptake by the trees. As part of the practical learning, the participants were given the opportunity to practice the techniques and replicate the approach.

CSS was established to develop and implement the P&G Smallholder program while ensuring ethical and responsible sourcing for palm kernel oil and safeguarding the interests of the independent smallholder farmers. CSS will continue to organize Field Days on other farm management topics to enhance the diffusion of best agricultural practices in the smallholder farming community. The practices should increase yields from the small farms.
