P&G-Center for Sustainable Small-Owners

Subsequent to the Earth Week announcement made by Procter & Gamble (P&G), MISI and P&G officially launched P&G Center for Sustainable Small-owners (P&G-CSS) on 17th June 2019 in alignment with P&G’s commitment to its Smallholder Program.

There are approximately thirty thousand Independent Smallholder Farmers (ISHFs) in the P&G palm kernel oil supply chain network i.e. around 12% of Malaysia’s Independent

Smallholder Population. P&G-CSS is established to safeguard the interest of the small farmers and improve their livelihood while ensuring ethical and responsible sourcing for oil palm with commitments to no deforestation, no new plantation on peatlands and no exploitation in the supply chain.

The event was attended by 140 small farmers who are part of P&G Smallholder program and invited guests from various organizations including MIMOS Berhad, YARA International, FGV Holdings Berhad, University Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) representatives, Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) and others. Following the launch, a field event focussed on independent smallholder landscape upstream was organized. It provided the participants an overview of the P&G Smallholders Program and P&G Responsible Sourcing of Palm Policy.

The event was graced by by Mr. William West Follmer, the Environment, Science, and Technology Officer from the Embassy of United States in Kuala Lumpur. The event included visits to smallholder collection center for palm fruit and smallholder farms which are part of the P&G Improvement of Livelihood initiative. P&G has committed to develop 250 of such model learning farms with best-in-class sustainability management and good agricultural practices aimed to diffuse further into its smallholder network within the P&G supply chain in Johor.

The field event concluded with a community engagement event involving dialogs with women small farmers and their role in the Oil Palm supply chain.[
