It is with great pleasure that we invite you to attend the PhD Winter Academy 2019 at the Malaysia Institute for Supply Chain Innovation (MISI) for an intense period of learning, discovering, and debating new research in operations and supply chain management. In addition to that, you will meet some of your future colleagues and have a great time in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!

This is the third PhD academy to be organized at MISI, and we have a group of distinguished professors from prestigious academic institutions taking part. Each of them will lead several sessions on topics in their respective areas of expertise. It is a great platform to meet doctoral students from different institutions and exchange ideas. Although we expect applicants to come from different institutions, countries and backgrounds, one thing you all have in common is excellence.

TUITION FEE

There is a required tuition fee of RM 250 for international students. Participants are responsible for all travel, lodging and incidental expenses.

Faculty Biography


Prof. Xenophon Koufteros
Texas A & M University, Mays Business School

Xenophon Koufteros is a Professor of Supply Chain Management at the Mays Business School, Texas A & M University where he also holds the Jenna & Calvin R. Guest Endowed Professorship in Business. He currently serves as the Director of the Supply Chain Consortium at the Mays Business school. Prof. Koufteros has published close to 50 articles in refereed journals including Journal of Operations Management, Production and Operations Management, Decision Sciences, Journal of Supply Chain Management, Structural Equations Modeling, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, International Journal of Production Research, International Journal of Production Economics, International Journal of Production and Operations Management, and OMEGA amongst others. Prof. Koufteros also served as Associate Editor of Journal of Operations Management, Journal of Supply Chain Management, Journal of Business Logistics, and Decision Sciences and as a special issue editor for several journals. He received the Best Associate Editor Award for Journal of Operations Management and for Journal of Supply Chain Management multiple times and the Best Empirical Paper Award for Decision Sciences. He is also a member of the editorial board for Production & Operations Management, Structural Equation Modeling: An Interdisciplinary Journal, Educational & Psychological Measurement, and Journal of Marketing Channels. Prof. Koufteros teaches courses across all levels and he received numerous teaching awards such as the Association of Former Students (AFS) Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching at the University level and at the Mays Business School. He also received several awards for his service to the profession and students, such as the Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award in Individual Student Relationships at the University level, Texas A & M University. He currently does global research in the area of ethics in purchasing via experiments and studies global supply chain security.



Dr. Shardul Phadnis
Malaysia Institute for Supply Chain Innovation (MISI)

Dr. Shardul Phadnis is an Associate Professor and Director of Research at Malaysia Institute for Supply Chain Innovation (MISI), and affiliated with MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics (CTL) as a researcher. He is leading MISI’s Center for e-Commerce And Retail Transformation(CART). Dr. Shardul Phadnis research motivation is to explore the challenge and the process of designing and adapting business models in the rapidly evolving and dynamic supply chains. His research interests lie at the intersection of studies of business models and supply chains, and organizational decision processes that shape these business models.

Dr. Shardul phadnis work seeks to contribute to the scholarly domains of supply chain strategy, business models, scenario planning, and managerial cognition. Dr. Shardul Phadnis is method-agnostic. He published works have used various research methods–mathematical modeling, qualitative and mixed methods research, field experiments, etc.–each chosen for its suitability to answer the study’s research question.

Dr. Shardul Phadnis current research projects examine business models in the global apparel industry by taking an end-to-end supply chain perspective (from procurement to retailing). His earlier work in this area received the Giarratani Rising Star Award in 2015 from the Industry Studies Association. Dr. Shardul Phadnis also engaged in a field study that examines the supply chains of small-and-medium enterprise (SME) retailers in South East Asia.

Some applications of his research include a scenario-based long-range planning process used by transportation agencies in the U.S. for deciding the investments in the freight infrastructure, an organizational process to adapt a firm’s supply chain strategy by monitoring its business environment, and applications of scenario planning to aid adaptation of supply chain strategy at three large companies.

Before beginning his academic career, he worked in manufacturing firms for seven years and led the continuous improvement program at a design-to-manufacture firm.



Dr. Javad Feizabadi
Malaysia Institute for Supply Chain Innovation (MISI)

Dr. Javad Feizabadi is an associate professor at MIT Global SCALE Network – Malaysia institute for supply chain innovation (MISI) and a research associate with Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is also the director of PhD program and PhD Winter academy as well as Mobility Center of Excellence at MISI. Dr. Feizabadi’s primary research interest focuses on designing and managing supply chains in a highly volatile business landscape. Specifically he investigates the challenges associated with supply chain configurations which are exposed to various sources of turbulence. Contributing to scholarly domain of adaptable supply chain in both nascent and established markets has been the main concentration of his research. Dr. Feizabadi’s research is not constrained by the method and he uses different research designs as long as there is a fit between the state of scholarly literature and data/research question. In some of his recent research projects he has utilized various research designs including grounded theory, mathematical modeling, survey and field experiments etc. wherever the research question/data matches with the state of literature.

Before joining to academia Dr. Feizabadi worked in automotive industry for eight years on aligning supply chain with the firm’s business strategy. He has a B.S. in industrial management, a M.S. in Industrial Management – Majored in Operations Research and a PhD in Operations Management from University of Tehran, Iran. He is honored to be ranked first in nation-wide PhD and MS entrance examination. Dr. Feizabadi also worked as research associate at IMD Switzerland and has been an MIT visiting professor.

EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH AND LAB EXPERIMENTS: A PRACTICUM

Abstract

Theory testing is at the heart of empirical research. Empirical research may rely on responses to surveys, secondary data sources, field cases, or data attained via experiments. In this course we will discuss experimental research and in particular, lab experiments. Lab experiments offer the advantage of high internal validity. If done with practitioners, it adds to external validity and generalizability. We will discuss the motivation and opportunities for experimental research, advantages, challenges, and methods. As part of this course, participants will actively engage in constructing a lab experiment so the concepts and application of the methodology can be reinforced. All the practical issues related to research design and operationalization will be discussed so the participant can undertake lab experiments on his/her own.
